Restructuring of the B level to create more security and increase the quality of stay. Opened in 1888, the main railway station in Frankfurt am Main occupies a special position as the most important hub in the German rail network. With over 450,000 travellers per day, it is particularly important that the transport system is made safer and that the quality and comfort for travellers is improved.
To this end, the underground B-level and the northern part of the listed reception building, including the reception hall, will be multiplied and reorganised in order to equalise the growing flow of travellers between long-distance, regional and local transport. At the same time, the public transport areas will be designed to a high standard and the quality of stay will be significantly increased with sufficient space for modern retail and catering outlets. The historic building fabric in the ticket hall and on the cross platform will be exposed and, together with the south wing that was restored in the 1990s, will be given a uniform appearance. Clear routing and open lines of sight enable visitors to orientate themselves easily and navigate safely. The hard-wearing materials and the clear design of the surfaces form a contrast to the complex technical extensions and ensure durability and flexibility for further development. Frankfurt a.M. will have an attractive entrance to the city that is appropriate to its importance.
