Artistic interventions at twelve Berlin S-Bahn stations that improve orientation, enhance safety, and make stays more pleasant. Twelve Berlin S-Bahn stations were upgraded with design measures. The aim was to transform the pure functionality of the infrastructural space and create places that not only serve movement, but also provide spaces with good orientation, a high level of safety and a pleasant quality of stay.
In close collaboration with the Berlin based design agency No Pink Studio, differentiated, site-specific design concepts were created that respond sensitively to the respective urban, social and cultural identity of the railway stations. Local artists - including Kera Christian Hinz, Falk Land, Tape That and Guillermo Quintana - developed visual interventions that lend the Wedding, Frankfurter Allee, Landsberger Allee and Bornholmer Straße stations, among others, a new design signature. The spectrum ranges from large-format wall graphics to expansive pixel art - always with a clear reference to the urban context. In addition to the artistic signature, great importance was attached to an architecturally clear structure: The optimisation of visual axes, the opening up of spatial sequences and an overall brighter appearance significantly increase the subjective feeling of safety. The stations are thus transformed into translucent, communicative interfaces in the urban space - places to arrive, pass through and consciously linger.
